Introduction
Pula is known for its Roman arena and lively summer atmosphere, but some of the most beautiful places in the area lie just a short boat ride away.
As someone who spends most of the summer working as a skipper along the southern coast of Istria, I often see how surprised visitors are when they discover the small islands scattered around Pula. Each of them has its own character — from sandy beaches to quiet rocky coves and crystal-clear water.
Here are a few islands around Pula that are especially worth exploring.
1. Ceja Island
Ceja is one of the most popular small islands near Pula, located just off the coast of Medulin. It’s known for its relaxed atmosphere, a small beach restaurant, and clear, shallow water perfect for swimming.
Many visitors come here for lunch or a long swim, but the best part of Ceja is exploring the quieter coves around the island that most people never see.
2. Levan Island
Levan is unique in this part of Istria because it has one of the few sandy beaches in the area. On calm summer days, the water becomes incredibly clear and shallow, making it a perfect place to spend a few hours relaxing.
Most visitors arrive by small boats from Medulin, which gives the island a very laid-back summer vibe.
3. Fratarski Island
Fratarski Island lies very close to Pula and is a favourite swimming spot for locals. The island is surrounded by rocky beaches and beautiful turquoise water.
The outer side of the island has several quiet spots where you can anchor a boat and swim in complete peace away from the more crowded areas.
4. Kozada Island
Kozada is a small uninhabited island located near the entrance to Pula Bay. Because it has no buildings or restaurants, it feels wild and untouched.
The rocky coastline creates perfect places for swimming and snorkeling, and it’s often possible to find a quiet spot even in the middle of the summer season.
Exploring the Islands by Boat
One of the best things about the islands around Pula is how close they are to each other. In a single day, it’s possible to visit several different places, swim in hidden coves, and enjoy the quiet beauty of the Adriatic Sea.
From the water, the coastline of southern Istria reveals a completely different side of the region that most travellers never see from land.
